Addressing misconceptions about migration and health

The UCL–Lancet Commission on Migration and Health: The health of a world on the move.

Bernadette Kumar (former Director of the Norwegian Centre for Migration and Minority Health at the Norwegian Public Health Institute) is one of the authors of "The UCL-Lancet commission on migration and health: the health of a world on the move".

The Lancet:

“These results challenge misconceptions and policies that do injustice to migrants, representing them as a risk and burden to health systems and society, and instead highlight positive contributions of migration in these countries.”

Kumar is by her own definition, a migrant. She has had a significant impact on the issue of migrant health globally, and particularly in Norway, where she was the Director of the Norwegian Centre for Migration and Minority Health at the Norwegian Public Health Institute from 2010-2017. The Commission was published in the December 15 Issue of The Lancet, which also contains a number of other relevant articles about migrant health. In Jocalyn Clark and Richard Horton’s article they state:

“The UCL–Lancet Commission on Migration and Health steps into [this] divided debate to provide evidence for cooperation and action on what is one of the most pressing issues of the 21st century. Its foundation is that migration and health are inextricably linked—and key to sustainable development. The Commission provides a framework of migration as a dynamic process, providing evidence of the multiple factors that could be beneficial or detrimental to individuals and systems.”
